Cycling: Western Cyclocross League

Despite snapping his rear derailleur off near the end of the race, necessitating a run up the last hill to the finish line, Leon finished in 10th place at the Ashton Court round of the Western Cyclocross League. Pics in the gallery.

Cycling: Road Racing in NZ

Gareth, our man in New Zealand, competed in a local road race, airing the LVIS away strip for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere. In his own words:

Did a road race yesterday. If I'd not beasted myself on the back of an ill fated 3 man break, I might have had the energy to win the sprint for third - as it was I got sixth about two seconds down. Maybe next time. It was a pretty small field, but some good scratch riders. Only one non-scratch guy beat me. It's a two stage race next week, the first stage handicapped, like yesterday, the second is mass start. Would be interesting to see how long I can stay with the scratch riders, seeing as they are all putting the finishing touches to their prep for the nationals. Hopefully I made an impression!

Cycling: Beast of the Beacons

Andy raced the Beast of the Beacons taking in the long course (109kms)

In his own words:

This year the route went the other way round, giving you the opportunity to go down "The Gap Road" Road…it was more like a rocky river bed!!! The old Killer V Dale did me proud though, giving most of the full sussers a lesson in descending. I would like to say that this was all down to my superior downhilling skills and rock-hard nerves, however my pathetic DX V Brakes had much to do with it!!!
Stayed clean side up all the way round and enjoyed riding in clouds over the highest on the Brecon Beacons passes next to Pen-y-fan.

Andy completed the course in 6 hours dead, amongst the first few finishers, mainly down to the final 4 mile fast road section which he attacked like the true roadie that he is.

Cycling: Single Speed World Championships, Sweden

Fraser, LVIS' representative at the 2006 Singlespeed World Championships held in Stockholm on 18th to 20th August managed to get himself into the official video of the event. In true LVIS and SSWC style, Fraser finished in 'not-first' position (all finishers are placed first, not-first or last)

The video is available here

There was also some good news after the main race: The contest to decide where the SSWC is held next year (a drinking contest...) was won by Scotland, meaning that the event will be held relatively close to the LVIS heartland in 2007. Time to start organising a team.

Triathlon: UK Ironman

The Institute's President showed why he has held the position for several years when he raced the UK Ironman Triathlon. Rob ploughed round the course dispatching much of the opposition with a simple 'Uh-huh' as he passed. Rob finished in 12 hours 29 minutes and 42 seconds, netting him 149th/264 in his category and 513th/945 place overall.

Cycling: Highclere Cyclosportive

LVIS's team of intrepid road cyclists scorched round the Highclere Cyclosportive 115 mile course to finish 6th/16 in the Team category and 83rd/284 individually.

On a dull overcast day with the constant threat of rain and the odd shower, the Vegas team kit shone out, lightening the mood. the team kept their heads together, stayed upright (unlike many other riders...) and kept up a consistent quick tempo. Despite a couple of punctures due to the gravel washed onto the roads by the rain, the team finished very strongly and crossed the line 4-abreast in true Vegas style. The team beat the Silver standard but could well have made the Gold standard but for the punctures. Despite a request of 'Shoot me!' near the end, the team enjoyed the event and will doubtless be back to conquer the gold standard.

Cycling: Newport Velodrome Session

The LVIS track day at Newport Velodrome was a big sucess with 11 brave riders making the trip and hammering round the track for four hours including Olympic Sprints, Points and Scratch races, 200m flying sprints and a team persuit. No riders were injured in the making of this event (though it was a close call a couple of times...). Pics in the gallery.

Cycling: Saab Salomon Mountain Mayhem 24 Hour

Las Vegas Institute of Sport's team at the Saab Salomon Mountain Mayhem finished 49th out of 245 teams. Starting off with only three riders due to Andy's very Vegas-style absence due to a wedding, Darren, Dylan and Gareth lapped at a steady pace to position the team in the 80s early on, taking a pragmatic approach compared to several teams' attempts to burn themselves out early on . Andy's arrival in the early evening brought a fresh pair of legs to the team and Andy proceeded to belt out some fast laps. The overnight riding was hard work but the team's position gradually improved (despite traditional night time crashes from most of the team!). Once the sun rose again, the team started to up the pace and worked its way up the results sheet to sit in 51st place with three laps to go.
Darren managed to perform the traditional 'Rrroberts Memorial Lap' to set Andy up for a final lap attempt to get the team into the top 50, a task which he completed in style, gaining places right up to the finish line.

Cycling: Bristol Bike Fest - Bristol 12

The LVIS team consisting of Andy, Darren, Leon and Dylan raced to a top 10 finish in Bristol's most popular mtb race. With a fast starting Leon putting the team in a good position early on, the team moved as high as 8th place but eventually succumbed to some overly serious competition (including timing gaps between us and them...). The course was great with a significantly proportion of technical, twisty and very bumpy singletrack.

As usual LVIS lead the way in performing well while remaining relaxed and enjoying the event.

Results: here.

Next stop Saab Saloman Mountain Mayhem 24 hour race on 24th/25th June.

Triathlon: Weymouth Half-Ironman Triathlon

Rob completed the Weymouth Half-Ironman with a pb, breaking 5 hours ( a big Tri benchmark). Rob finished in 27th/51 in the 35-39 Category and 107th/314 overall. All this was in spite of a 2 minute penalty given to Rob by an overly officious marshal for allegedly jumping a red light. Rob furiously stated "It was yellow! The marshal just couldn't see clearly enough because I was going so fast".

Results: here.
